Overview:

Under supervision of the BioSITE Director and partnering with other program educators, the BioSITE Educator will work to ensure successful implementation of this year-long  environmental science field program which takes place at field sites along local creeks. Expectations include full engagement in the program's field studies, acting as a service-learning mentor, and working directly with both high school and elementary students and their teachers.  Assists in planning, training, curriculum design, materials maintenance, data management, website resource development, and implementation and evaluation of program activities.

Responsibilities

Highly visible position, especially with external communities.  Responsible for achieving goals with emphasis on program execution. Opportunity for innovation and environmental science activity design.

  • Implementation of weekly training for high school students
  • Elementary field day preparation, coordination, and supervision
  • Liaison for participating classroom teachers and program partners
  • Organization and maintenance of program supplies, scientific equipment, data and metrics. Ongoing attention to program quality, assessment, and improvement
  • Development of classroom extension materials and web resources
  • Direct instruction of elementary students as needed
  • Occasional weekend work hours
  • Departmental duties as required

Education/Experience

Any combination of education and experience providing the required knowledge and skills is qualifying.  Minimum employment standards are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, environmental studies, and/or education
  • Knowledge of environmental science
  • Experience implementing hands-on science curriculum for children and adults
  • Strong commitment to inquiry-based science programming
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work as a team
  • Ability to work outdoors lifting and carrying equipment
  • Spanish speaking skills are beneficial
